London Olympics 2012 Live Stream: Aquatics Centre Diving Boards (Video)

Zaha hadid is one of the most important architects practising today but for roughly 20 years her architecture practice didn’t exactly make buildings instead they created radical experimental but practically unbuildable designs it’s only been the last 10 years or so with the advance instructural engineering software of the technology has finally caught up with her imagination.

Today, nearly 60 per projects are under construction including the aquatic centre. And like all her projects the form of the building is so complicated that typical supports like columns just can’t handle the geometry instead supporters imbedded within the structure making an enormous forms appear weightless. This include something that no other architect in history has ever done. A redesign of the olympic diving board.

Historicaly olympic diving boards have been built in 2 parts. A 30 foot tall concrete support column and a platform to dive off. For the aquatic centre Zaha has combined it to pieces into a single seamless shape that turns olympic diving into global theatre.
