Gearing up for London Olympics 2012

The London 2012 Organizing Committee (LOCOG) announced that the world-renowned Red Arrows aerobatic display team will perform a nine-ship flypast in Big Battle formation to symbolically connect the entire UK and unleash a British welcome of epic proportions on the day of the Olympic Opening Ceremony on July 27, 2012. Flying over London 2012 Live Sites in Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London before the Opening Ceremony begins, the iconic Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team will herald the start of the Games. Furthermore, the big screens that were erected with the help of BBC and local authorities, supported by the National Lottery through the Olympic Lottery Distributor, BT and Lloyds TSB (partners), and supporters Cisco and Cadbury, will become fully dedicated to coverage of London 2012 starting May.

The motto for the Games “Inspire a Generation” was also unveiled recently. It will appear on branding and publications in the run-up to, and during, the Games. The motto reflects the promise made when London bid for the Games and launched the most recent “spectacular” installation of the Olympic Rings situated at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, west London. They are made up of 20,000 plants and because they are over 50 meters long, the rings are visible from the Heathrow flight path. The flowers were planted over a period of 5 days and consist of Pansy “Light Blue”, Viola “Clear Yellow”, Viola “Black Delight”, apple mint (Mentha suaveolens) and Viola “Red Blotch” plants. They will be in full bloom in time for the Summer Games.

Lastly, preparations are under way for the London 2012 Festival – the country’s biggest ever arts festival. Over a thousand events will be held around UK to welcome the world as part of the Cultural Olympiad. Ten million free opportunities will be on hand for everyone to partake in events happening across the UK.
